Russia latest to warn US of ‘harmful consequences’ if it leaves Iran deal

Russia on Tuesday warned the United States of “harmful consequences” if Washington pulled out of a nuclear deal signed with Iran and world powers.

ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Russia on Tuesday warned the United States of “harmful consequences” if Washington pulled out of a nuclear deal signed with Iran and world powers.

Speaking to reporters, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said there would be “inevitable harmful consequences to any actions toward breaking these agreements.”

US President Donald Trump is expected to make a decision on the Iran deal on Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. Erbil time, he said in a tweet.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed between Iran, the US, the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, and France in 2015.

Iran signed the deal promising to halt its nuclear program in return for the lifting of international sanctions.

President Trump has often criticized the 2015 deal and has threatened to scrap the current agreement unless new, more stringent restrictions were imposed on Iran by May 12.

Germany, France, and Britain have said they would honor the nuclear deal amid an ultimatum by the US about a cancellation of the pact.

An enraged Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday warned the US that it would “soon regret” any decision to withdraw from the nuclear deal.

He added that Iran would “not negotiate with anyone about our weapons and defenses,” stating his country would “make and store as many weapons, facilities, and missiles” as needed.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, meanwhile, has accused Iran of deploying “very dangerous weapons” in Syria to threaten Israel.

Iran “openly calls, daily, for the destruction, the eliminations of Israel from the face of the earth and practices unmitigated aggression against us,” he told reporters during a visit to Cyprus on Tuesday.

“It is now seeking to plant very dangerous weapons in Syria…for the specific purpose of our destruction,” the Israeli Prime Minister added.

On April 30, Netanyahu unveiled exclusive details about Iran’s long-standing nuclear program.

Based on the evidence, Netanyahu emphasized that Iran’s nuclear program never really ended. It began in 1999 under the name, “Project Amad,” and it continues today.
