ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – A Kurdish man killed his father and injured mother on Sunday, ten days after they returned from the Netherlands to Erbil for a visit.

Evidence currently suggests the man who committed the murder has psychological problems, Erbil Police spokesperson Hogir Aziz told Kurdistan 24, quoting the suspects mother. The female victim was severely injured in the attack and immediately transferred to a hospital.

The 31-year-old man grew up in the Netherlands with his family, according to information obtained by a Kurdistan 24 Correspondent on site.

The incident took place at 08:15 am local time in Erbil’s Havalan Neighborhood. The mother reportedly attempted to mediate a heated argument between the son and her husband but was stabbed while intervening in the brawl. Police said it was a miracle she survived.

After killing his father and injuring his mother, the man allegedly inflicted stab wounds on his body before throwing himself from the second-floor window of the house, police reported. His suicide attempt failed, and he is currently in custody receiving medical help.

“This is their house. The family would visit from Europe almost once every six months,” a neighbor, whose name was not mentioned during a live broadcast, told Kurdistan 24.

“They returned about ten days ago, but this time, they had their son accompanying them,” he added. The neighbor claimed no one in the neighborhood had seen the son in the past few days as he was seemed to prefer remaining indoors.

The neighbors also noted that the family was quiet and had never heard of any issues with the family.
